The late summer bank holiday this year is Monday, 29th August, giving us a nice, long weekend.
The weather may have been a little up and down this summer, but whatever the weather, there’s always something to do with the whole family around Dunblane and Stirling.
Here’s some of our top suggestions for things to do this summer bank holiday:
Great Scottish Swim
This popular open water swimming event takes place in the beautiful Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, located under an hour’s drive from the hotel. The event sees individuals and teams compete in swimming events over Friday 26th and Saturday 27th August, including a 5k run and 800m open water swim, plus the ultimate open water challenge. Not just for adults, those aged 12 and up can take part in a ½ mile swim.
Surrounded by mountains, forests, glens and sparkling open water, the Great Scottish Swim is perfect for spectators and enjoying some exciting outdoor swimming events.
Tales from the Battlefield
Head to the Wallace Monument just outside Stirling to travel back in time to one of the most dramatic and bloody periods in Scottish history. Watch a live outdoor performance by costumed actors as they tell the story of the aftermath of The Battle of Stirling Bridge.
Performances are free; however, it will cost you to go into the monument itself.
Performance dates are 27th and 28th August, at 11:15am, 12pm, 12:45pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:15pm and 4pm.
Woodland Fairy Experience
Take your little ones to the Woodland Fairy Experience at North Ballochruin Farm in the Campsie Fells, which is a 40-minute drive from the hotel. The Fairy Trail within the farm is 300m long and leads onto an idyllic 1km woodland walk. Throughout the Fairy Trail are lots of tiny fairy doors for your kids to search for and discover. Your kids will have a whale of a time uncovering the intricate fairy doors carved into trees throughout the woodland walk.
The Woodland Fairy Experience is open Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm.
Blair Drummond Safari Park
A classic family-friendly day out is waiting to be experienced at Blair Drummond Safari Park. Drive around the animal park and see a range of animals up close, including lions, rhinos, zebras, tigers and many more. Take a boat ride to Chimp Island, ride the flying fox or watch your kids play in the Adventure Area or amusement arcade. Included in the ticket price is a sea lion presentation, birds of prey flying demonstration, foot safari through the petting farm and a park with picnic areas.
The park is open 10am to 5.30pm every day. The Safari Park is located less than a 20-minute drive from the hotel.
Macroberts Art Centre
On Saturday 27th August, this arts venue is hosting a Roald Dahl weekend with George’s Marvellous Medicine Storytelling Sessions at 10.30am and 12.30pm, and Dahl Drop In Art Sessions – art workshops inspired by Roald Dahl and his famous characters – from 11.30am to 1.30pm. Over the bank holiday weekend, the arts centre also has a free exhibition called Picture Hooks – an exhibition that shows the creative process of illustrating children’s books, and youth theatre drama workshops for kids in Primary 1-3.
The Macroberts Art Centre is situated in the University of Stirling campus, about a 10-minute drive from the hotel.
Book a family long weekend at DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro and fill your bank holiday weekend with fun outdoor and indoor activities throughout the local area.
