International Women’s Day was celebrated this week, on Tuesday March 8th. People around the world recognised great women – and how extraordinary all women can be.
The day inspired us to take a look at just a few of the amazing women who have hailed from Perthshire. Pioneers of their field, these women became beacons of bravery, aspiration and creativity.
Whether the women who inspire you are politicians, artists, or just simply your mum, friend or sister, celebrate International Women’s Day (or week!) with something out of the ordinary.
Born in Perthshire in 1894, Victoria Drummond was god-daughter of Queen Victoria and a member of the British aristocracy. Instead of living a life of privilege, Drummond trained to become the first British female marine engineer. She received an MBE for bravery at sea for her extraordinary feats during WWII, where she single-handedly kept the SS Bonita running while under siege by the Germans.
Katharine Marjory Ramsay
Katharine Marjory Ramsay, the Duchess of Atholl (also knowns as ‘the Red Duchess’) was the Scottish Unionist Member of Parliament for Kinross and West Perthshire from 1923 to 1938. In fact, she was the first ever female Scottish MP elected to the House of Commons. She was a noblewoman who fought against international cruelty and strove to improve social services and local government for ordinary people.
Killiechassie is a country estate lying on the banks of the River Tay in Perth and Kinross. The estate is home to famous female author, J. K. Rowling. Although not born in the area, Rowling has called the region, and further afield in Edinburgh, her home for a number of years. The author is of course, the writer of the Harry Potter series, and has sold over 400 million books worldwide. She is one of the richest women in the UK and considered an influential woman in the creative arts, politics and more.
