Here at the DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro, we make no secret of our deep love for the winter. Not the most popular British season, we know, but we’re privileged to be based in one of the UK’s most undeniable winter wonderlands. Quite simply, if you haven’t seen the way winter works in the Scottish Highlands…well, let’s just say you’re overdue a treat!
There’s absolutely so much on offer right on our doorstep, you could easily spend the whole winter here and never do the same thing twice. But assuming you’re heading our way for a short break only, what are the wintery highlights that come most highly recommended?
The crowning place of the King of Scots is a stunning sight at any time of year, though with a snowy backdrop really does take on a whole new dynamic. The capital of the Picts a full 1,500 years ago, the Castle is today one of the most important stately homes in Scotland and an absolute must-see while in the area. Though more closely associated with summer strolls, Scone Castle’s grounds and gardens are simply spectacular during the winter.
Not just a summer activity…though the weather will of course have to be on your side…quad trekking makes for an absolutely fantastic day out. Quad treks give you the unique opportunity to check out the most incredible sights of the Perthshire countryside while enjoying a thrilling ride on a cutting-edge ATV. Kids over 12 are also welcome to come along for the ride, though only adults are permitted to take the controls.
A genuinely spell-binding stretch of water, Loch Tay is one of the deepest lochs in all of Scotland and the largest in Perthshire. Though the shingle beach at Kenmore and most water-sports may be off-limits until the summer, the hauntingly beautiful sight of the loch at dusk or dawn is the kind of spectacle you’ll never forget. And when it comes to taking in the sights of Scotland’s resident wildlife, Loch Tay is usually a hotbed of activity!
Wonderfully warming in more ways than one, there’s perhaps no better escape from the biting winter weather than taking a look around the world-famous Edradour Distillery. One of the smallest distilleries in Scotland with just three workers overseeing production, the 10-year aged Single Malt they come up with here is the stuff of legends. Suffice to say that sampling sessions and a few takeaway goodies are nothing short of mandatory!
Last but not least, it’s worth remembering that with more than 2,000 square miles of incredible landscape on your doorstep, winter walks in Perthshire take some beating. Whether looking to gently stroll around a loch, wander the wilderness or get serious with some craggy clambering, it’s all right there for the taking!
